France, with its breathtaking châteaux, sun-drenched vineyards, and historic landmarks, is one of the most romantic places to say “I do.” But before you envision walking down the aisle in a lavender field or a candlelit chapel, it’s essential to understand your ceremony options. Whether you’re dreaming of a legal, religious, or symbolic wedding, here’s what you need to know to plan your perfect ceremony in France.

 Legal Wedding Ceremony in France

If you want your wedding to be legally recognized in France, there’s one important rule: it must take place at the local town hall (Mairie).

Key Requirements :

  • At least one partner must have resided in France for a minimum of 60 days before submitting an application, the same year as the wedding.

  • The civil ceremony is conducted in French and officiated by the local mayor or a representative.

  • You’ll need to provide specific documents, including birth certificates, proof of residency, and a Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) from your home country. As same as two witnesses.

Due to these residency requirements, most international couples handle the legal paperwork in their home country and opt for a symbolic or religious ceremony in France instead.

Religious Wedding Ceremony in France

For couples who wish to incorporate faith into their vows, a religious ceremony is a beautiful option. However, it’s important to note that religious weddings in France are not legally binding on their own and usually follow a civil ceremony.

Key Considerations :

  • Many churches require at least one partner to be a member of the faith.

  • For a Jewish wedding, it is easy to find a synagogue who will accept to marry you.

  • Catholic ceremonies are only performed in churches and typically require a pre-marital course. This can be very difficult when you live abroad.

  • Finding a bilingual celebrant is easier in major cities like Paris, Nice, or Bordeaux.

If you’re planning a luxury wedding in a historic chapel or grand cathedral, it’s advisable to work with a wedding planner who can navigate the religious requirements and liaise with officiants.

Symbolic Wedding Ceremony in France

For couples seeking ultimate flexibility, a symbolic ceremony is the perfect solution. This type of ceremony has no legal obligations, allowing you to craft a deeply personal experience in any setting.

Why Choose a Symbolic Ceremony ?

  • Freedom of location : Whether it’s a vineyard in Provence, a château in the Loire Valley, or a beach in the French Riviera, the possibilities are endless.

  • Personalization : You can include cultural traditions, handwritten vows, or rituals like handfasting or wine blending for example. Or no rituals. It has to represent you !

  • Officiant options : Hire a professional celebrant or have a loved one officiate for a more intimate touch.

Example : One of my couples, decided on a Symbolic Ceremony, although they had no ritual planned, they had a guest sing live for them. Very touching and so deeply emotional.

Choosing the Right Ceremony for You

There’s no “right” or “wrong” choice when it comes to your wedding ceremony—it all depends on what feels most authentic to you as a couple.
